No SR20 (sadly) but on my way home from work, I spotted an E36 Touring, same color as pictured. I wish I'd had time to snap a pic. I suppose it could have come to this country any number of ways, but if I had to guess, it's probably a diplomat's car.

Not that big of a deal. James Clay has had one for many years (registered in VA.) Imported as parts, assembled, used US spec drivetrain/parts, submit for inspection and VIN, done.
If you look at the US Customs website, it outlines what a chassis/frame is, and the tariff for it. And the VA DMV website outlines how to register and apply for a VIN on a car you built yourself, from major components (engine, trans, diff, etc.)
Rare, yes, but not that hard if you have the time to work to make it happen.
